The male ostrich has dark brown to black feathers covering their body, with white plummage on the wing tips. The legs and beaks of the male have a reddish-pink coloring.
The female ostrich has feathers of various shades of brown and gray, and the legs and beak are less colorful.
This male decided he wasn't too fond of my camera. This picture was taken as he was hissing like a cat, only much louder. His wings were spread as he postured to intimidate me. If not for the fence between us, I would have been quite intimidated! This bird is about 8 feet tall and weighs over 300 pounds.
The ostrich feet are very powerful. They have two toes, with a thick, strong claw at the end of the front toe. They look much like you might imagine a dinosaur foot to look. One kick from these powerful feet could cause a mortal injury.
I may have been on the farm too long, but I could swear this curious female winked at me!
Ostriches are very curious indeed, and have to investigate anything new. This group of hens proves that true as they came over to check out me out.
This male is sending warning signals to me not to approach. It is the same bird pictured in the close-up above that was hissing at me.
I snapped this picture just as a curious hen leaned down to taste my camera. Ostriches often "nip" at things, including your fingers. Luckily, I managed to get my camera and fingers out of reach just in time.
A nice close-up showing the golden brown feathers of a female ostrich.
A close-up of the dangerous claw on an ostriches toe. This is close to the actual size. |
